Naracoorte Caves School Camp

The Naracoorte Caves and Mount Gambier offer a completely unique experience for school camps.   The diverse ecosystems, geology and history of the area make it a perfect program location for school groups that are seeking nature-based activities that are fun, hands on and insightful! From Adelaide, Naracoorte Caves National Park is just under 4 hours away. Along the way, there’s plenty to do for school groups, and of course we often stop off to see major sights, enjoy walks and learn about Indigenous Lands that we pass through. Below we’ll explore the some main points that teachers may wish to consider when booking a school camp in the Naracoorte Caves and Mt Gambier regions.

Naracoorte Caves Program

Ancient History, Fossils, Geology, Bats

The Naracoorte Caves are really a story book that can be walked through, that is both fun and engaging, as well as deeply educational. The caves offer opportunities for school groups to learn about bats – and see them in flight at night using infrared imaging, while the world heritage listed fossils highlight a period in the Earth’s history when megafauna walked the earth! The incredible geology is explained by a dedicated guide, while students are taken on a guided walk through the intricate and beautiful cave systems.

The region includes towering ancient cliffs, beautiful gorge walks, deep craters you would think you were on another planet! The Flinders Ranges has some of the best star gazing opportunities in the world. The region can be broken up into a southern, central and northern Flinders Ranges, each region offering a unique experience which Students Explore Australia can guide your group through.

Adventure Caving

School groups on camp have the option to simply enjoy walking through the caves, or indeed we can take you adventure caving! Students are given the right safety equipment and there are challenges suitable for all ages. Adventure caving is actually a really fun way to develop resilience, calmness and composure in students – skills which are important inside the classroom and outside. To complete paths, students must remain calm, composed and persevere through some mentally challenging obstacles.

Sand Tobogganing

We have access to land along the Limestone Coast region where sandboarding is a real blast! With all the right equipment and technical knowhow from our program instructors, we’ll be able to have your students using up all their energy in no time – and yes, sandboarding does require a lot of energy – it’s easy to slide down, but it’s certainly a test to climb all the way back up! Like all our activities, we’ll share our full risk assessments with you.

Accommodation Options

We have accommodation partners that offer a both camping and dormitory style accommodation specifically for school groups. This means, you’re students will have their own dedicated amenities away from public and of course have a grassed area for play, recreational hall and firepit (subject to fire season bans). For convenience and safety, teachers quarters are right near the main group’s sleeping area too.

Major Sights

Aside from the remarkable cave systems that scatter the South East Coast, there are a number of interesting sights that could be included in your next school camp. Some sights and attractions that are also educational include:

  • The famous Blue Lake – best experienced in warmer months, with many educational links
  • Umpherston Sinkhole – interesting geology, history and a beautiful looking place
  • The Arts and Cultural Centre – great for local Indigenous history and local Dreaming
  • Centenary Tower – a great view and also a historic landmark
  • Ewen Ponds – for spectacular snorkelling in cave system (and I mean, spectacular!)

If there are any particular places you would like to visit, let us know and we can certainly include it in your next school camp. Simply enquire with the yellow button.

Curriculum Links

As you can see from the above, our Naracoorte Caves School Camp is ideal if your students are looking to have both a fun time, and an opportunity learn through hands on activities. Our program instructors can specifically focus on talking to your students about particular learning outcomes that link in with what your group is learning inside the classroom. When you enquire with our team, we’ll have an initial discussion with you before putting through a formal proposal. During this initial discussion, we’ll let you know if your learning outcomes can tie into a Naracoorte Caves program.

School's Feedback:

This was by far, the easiest and most enjoyable school camp I’ve chosen. In most-past this is thanks to the team at Students Explore Australia.
